August 2002 Events
These are the events which the Democrat Party has helped to publicize this past year.
Please note that these events are not necessarily Democrat-sponsored events.

  • AUG 2*  Vermilion Heritage Foundation and Downtown Danville host “Crowtillion,” the kick-off party for “Crowfest 2002: Danville- Something to Crow About”. Event is at Palace Park next to the Fischer Theatre from 6-8:00pm. Cost $12pp in advance, $15 at the door. Music by Blue Grass Revival. Country spread by Applewood Catering. Cash bar. Casual dress.. Call 443-3886 for tickets .

  • AUG 3 Nostalgic Nights movie at the Fisher Theater in Danville: Bye Bye Birdie w/ Dick VanDyke. 7:30PM, $5pp, refreshments avail. 

  • AUG 3* Bismarck Lions Club Fish Fry at Bismarck Park, 4-8pm, $5.00 all-you-can-eat fish and sweet corn. 

  • AUG 4-10 Georgetown Fair/ Democrats will have booth. Please contact Don Dunavan to volunteer to help…a shift of 2 hours would be greatly appreciated!…at 759-7324

  • AUG 5* Georgetown Fair Queen Pageant 7:00PM

  • AUG 7* Truck and Tractor Pull at the Georgetown Fair 7:00Pm 

  • AUG 7* Fundraiser for U.S.Senator Dick Durbin. BarBQ at Paul Manion’s home in Hoopeston, 4000N 1500 East (1 mile south of Hoopeston,; follow the signs), 6:00pm-8:00pm, rain or shine. Cost $25per person or $35 per couple. Cocktail party prior to the event at the home of Tony and Phyllis Freeland, 322 S. 4th St. in Hoopeston (NE corner of Washington and 4th Sts), $100 per person, also includes BarBQ at Paul’s and photo with the Senator. Please RSVP to Manion Law Office 283-5597 or Bonnie Manion at 283-6757 ASAP. Check preferred over cash. Mail your donation in any amount to the Manion Law Office if you will be unable to attend but wish to be a part of Dick Durbin’s re-election. Tickets avail in advance from Lynn Foster or Paul Manion.

  • AUG 8  Rodeo at Georgetown Fair 7:00PM

  • AUG 9  Country music’s Blake Shelton and Tyler Alexander at Georgetown Fair 7:30PM.

  • AUG 9-18 Illinois State Fair

  • AUG 9 Summer Sounds Concert at Kresge Park on Vermilion St in Danville. Zydeco Night featuring Hurricane Gumbo. Food by Java Hut and C& D BarBQ. 530-730pm

  • AUG 10 Chicago Bears vs Denver Broncos 7:05pm. Memorial Stadium, Champaign-Urbana

  • AUG 10  Demolition Derby at Georgetown Fair 7:00PM

  • AUG 10* Miss Black Danville Pageant at Laura Lee Fellowship House, Williams St in Danville, 6pm, $12 per person at the door

  • AUG 11* Motorcycle Fun Run benefit for Hoopeston Nursing Home residents. Register 12noon-130pm at Hoopeston Hospital, 701 E Orange St, and leave at 130pm. Ride 140miles , ending at Pla-Mor Lanes in Hoopeston for food and prizes.

  • AUG 11* Vermilion County Speedway, Route 150, Northern All Stars Late Models and 2 support classes. Gates open 5pm 

  • AUG 12* F.O.O.D. Meeting (Friends of Organized Democrats), 6pm, Deluxe Restaurant. Buffet dinner $8 includes drink, dessert and tip. From group president Dave Ryan, “Please come and find out how much fun our group is. No obligation to join, but if you do, it’s only $5 per year. We’re gearing up for the fall election! Come and see how you can support our candidates…we will have signs, literature for going door to door, sign-ups for different volunteer activities, etc. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

  • AUG 13* Salad luncheon at Lincoln United Methodist Church, 1400 Vermilion in Danville,11am-2pm, $5 per person

  • AUG 15 Democrat Day at the Illinois State Fair. County chairman’s Assn brunch with speaker. Annual State Democrat Convention; all state candidates will speak. Democrat Day Rally at the Fairgrounds. Reception with food and beverages .Vermilion County Dems may be taking a bus. Call Don Dunavan for reservations 759-7324 as soon as possible. Approx cost $48 includes County Chairmen’s Assn brunch with speaker, t-shirt, bus, munchies on the director’s lawn in the afternoon, and reception with food and drink in the evening  

  • AUG 16  Nostalgic Nights movies at the Fisher Theater in Danville: Love and Kisses w/ Jerry Van Dyke 7:30PM, $5pp, refreshments available.

  • AUG 17 Rendezvous on the Ridge, RidgeFarm. Illiana Antique Automobile Club car show 3pm-9pm. Parade at 1:00PM. Line up at the Friends Church

  • AUG 17* Danville Elks Lodge 147 all-you-can-eat hog roast in the lodge parking lot at 505 E Main in Danville at 6:00PM; $7 per person. No carryouts. DJ outside and inside.

  • AUG 17* Car wash sponsored by Union Missionary Baptist church, at Wal-Mart 11am-3pm. Funds go to support “Feed the Children” 

  • AUG 18 Vermilion County Democrats Golf Scramble at Harrison Park . Shotgun start 1:00PM. Golfers and non-golfers steak dinner Harrison Club House at 5pm $10 includes beverages. Call Don Dunavan for more info: 759-732

  • AUG 19  Vermilion County Democrats Regular Monthly Meeting 7pm, Democrat Hdqts, 107 W North, Danville
  • AUG 20-21  MAGIE Midwest Ag Industrial Show, all day, Vermilion County Airport
  • Friday, Aug 23  Dan McCollum for State Senate Danville office grand opening with special guest former U.S. Senator Paul Simon. Desserts and beverages, $10 suggested donation per person, 1:00PM-3:00PM. Office located next to the Java Hut on Vermilion St.

  • Friday, Aug 23  Other events For Dan McCollum: Conversation Hour 4-530pm, $250 per person at Webber-Thies office in Lincoln Square, Urbana. Also reception at Thornton-Walter home, 530-730pm, $100 per person. Call Jeanette for tickets or info at 366-3266.

  • Friday, Aug 23  Summer Sounds Concert at Kresge Park on Vermilion St in Danville. Blues Night featuring Lamont parson’s Experience. 530-730pm. Food by Java Hut and C&D BarBQ

  • Saturday, Aug 24  State Senate Minority Leader Emil Jones reception with Dan McCollum. 10-11am at the Great Impasta Restaurant, 114 W Church St, Champaign. Not a fundraiser. Focus on targeting the African-American community, voter registration, and voter turnout. Help elect Dan and make Emil the next President of the Illinois Senate!

  • Saturday, Aug 24  Poker Run for Alzheimer’s, start and finish at Gutterridge, call Mary Mayfield at 217-443-1845 for more info

  • Saturday, Aug 246th Annual Fiesta Latina Hispana- all day-Ellsworth Park, Danville

  • Sunday, Aug 25 Vermilion County Speedway Full Show and Hornet Special. Gates open 5pm. Located on Rte 150

  • Wednesday, Aug 28 *  Vermilion Heritage Foundation dinner featuring 5 different garlic varieties, complimentary glass of wine. $25 per person, 7-9pm at Harrison Park Clubhouse. Proceeds benefit the Fischer Theatre. Call Jean Beck for reservations at 442-7459

  • AUG 29-31  National Sweet Corn Festival-   McFerren Park in Hoopeston-Democrats will have a booth
  • AUG 30  Jeans Day for Alzheimer’s: to register a business or school to participate, at no cost to the organization, call Mary Mayfield at 217-443-1845 or Email: jeansdayforalzheimers@hotmail.com
  • AUG 30*  State job forum at DACC: Illinois Department of Central Management Services will offer Orientation at 9am, counseling from 9am-2pm, and civil service testing from 9am-1230pm. Employment reps from major state agencies will be available to answer questions about upcoming vacancies.
  • AUG 30  Phil Vassar concert, Palmer Arena in Danville, 8:00pm.Doors open at 630pm. Tickets $23.50 at arena, Ticketmaster, or call 442-3434.
  • AUG 30  Nostalgic Nights Movies at the Fisher Theater in Danville, showing For Love or Money, featuring a cameo role by Bobby Short, 730pm, $5pp, refreshments available
  • AUG 31 Labor Day Weekend events in Catlin at the park: Catlin Lions Club Fish Fry/Barbecue 4pm-630pm. Catlin Historical Society serving ice cream in the afternoon. Bingo 4pm-730pm. Raffle drawing at 8pm. 
  • AUG 31*  Tilton Hometown Daze Street Festival
  • AUG 31*  Midwest Senior Hardcourt Championships, Danville Tennis Club at Lincoln Park
  • AUG 31  Hoopeston Sweet Corn Parade 1030am…a great opportunity to wear a democrat shirt of some stickers (both will be avail at the parade line-up)… and walk or ride to show your support for our great ticket! Meet together on 6th Street between Main and Penn
  • AUG 31-SEPT 2          Antique and Crafts Bazaar-on-the-Street, Rossville ...local merchants and over 50 out-of-town dealers
  • Thursday through Saturday, Aug 29-31 National Sweetcorn Festival- McFerren Park in Hoopeston-Democrats will have a booth
